Product Type: Tungsten Disulfide (WS2)
Tungsten disulfide based coatings provide very similar performance as compared to molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) based coatings; however, tungsten disulfide will take continuous operating temperatures up to 850oF. MoS2 is good to 750oF. Since tungsten disulfide is much more expensive than molybdenum disulfide, it is more commonly used in lubrication applications in the 750oF to 850oF range. Coatings based on WS2 are commonly used in applications where load carrying, endurance and coefficient of friction are of key concern. Like MoS2 based coatings, WS2 based coatings provide effective lubrication in a wide range of loads up to and exceeding 250,000 psi. Tungsten disulfide coatings lubricate sacrificially by transferring lubricant between the mating surfaces, which helps to reduce wear, fretting, and lowers the coefficient of friction. WS2 coatings work well in vacuum environments and are ideal for space and aeronautical related applications. Tungsten disulfide based coatings have limited color, decorative and corrosion resistance functionality. To take full advantage of its higher temperature capability, solid film lubricants based on WS2 generally utilize high temperature organic resins and inorganic binder systems.
